The Modern Era
The modern era of literature is far longer than many people would assume. Technically starting in the late 1800’s, modern literature represents a simplistic form of writing in which imagery and symbolism is key; as opposed to more traditional writing styles. Modern literature is more commonly poetic writing and prose rather than full stories. Storytelling evolved a great amount in-between the pre modern and modern literature. Stories were often portraying a powerful character and had a moral of the story, while modern stories don’t always have morals. Writers such as George Orwell and J.D. Salinger and William Golding were major players in the mid 1900’s.
Modernist literature was a predominantly English genre of fiction writing, popular from roughly the 1910s into the 1960s. Modernist literature came into its own due to increasing industrialization and globalization. New technology and the horrifying events of both World Wars made many people question the future of humanity. For example what is becoming of the world? Many writers reacted to this question by turning towards modernist sentiments. the romantic period was over, no more nature and being. Modern fiction focused on thee inner self and consciousness. instead of progress writers saw a decline in civilization. instead of new technology the writers spoke of machinery and capitalism. To achieve the emotions of the new ways most writers was cast in the first person. before literature had been clear as a beginning, middle and end or introduction, conflict, resolution. The writers often write of society ills. In edition it has more irony, satire, and comparisons.

Marcel Proust – Marcel is a modern literature author who lived from 1871 to 1922 was born and grew up in France. His most notable novel would be the in search of lost time, this is a seven volume novel. It is well known for its length and involuntary memories.
Yan Martel – Martel is a Canadian author born 1963 in Spain and currently lives in Canada. He has won many awards for his most notable book, Life of pi. Which is a very popular book about the adventures of Tamil. His book was recently made into a movie which had a successful showing.
Jerome David Salinger – also known as J.D. Salinger was an American writer who earned his way into the notable authors at a young age. He was born 1919, and died 2010 at the age of 91. His most notable work would be Catcher in the rye which he won many awards for. This novel was originally intended for adults but has earned its way to a very popular book for adolescent because of its relation to teens in alienation etc.
William Golding – William was born 1911 and died 1993 at the age of 81. He lived in the United Kingdom throughout his life. William Golding served during World War II. His most noticeable work would have to be Lord of the flies. Which is a story about a group of kids who crash on a live and it’s about their struggle to survive and create a new society.

“As I lay Dying” by William Faulkner, shows how multiple people react, to a family’s mother’s death; by showing the mental and physical journey of the family as they travel to the mother’s home town to bury the mother’s body. The overarching theme of the book is that, sacrifices need to be made to achieve a goal. We believe that the literary time period of our book is around the modern period, this is due to it being published in 1930.
