Contemporary Poetry
The Contemporary Era was very important to all Literature, but it was especially important to poetry, there are great "Beat" poets that impacted poetry as a whole. Some of the greatest poets we know of came from this era. The Beat Generation took place from after WWII into the 60s and produced a great amount of Romantic poems. Romanticism was movement that was based off of nature and the natural world. Appreciating the world around you and admiring the beauty of nature. The movement effected more than just literature, it effected all of the arts from music to painters and other forms of art. All of which originated from the the western world, more specifically the United States.
The movement spread throughout the US taking it's iconic nature with it, bringing the era of an enlightenment and finding one's self in a sense. The contemporary era to some people was a movement of hippie poets and authors, and in a sense it was. However it was beautiful no matter what psychoactive drugs these men and women were experimenting with. In fact without the drug usage by many of the beat poets there may not even be some of the great poems we love.
The beat and contemporary era is what it is because of the non-conformity to tradition that all the poets and authors exhibit. The name "Beat" Generation came from Jack Kerouac when he thought of their movement as "upbeat" and the fresh new thing to happen to literature. This is what it was in all actuality, we can relate to this by looking at what is cool today. Hipsters and non-conforming to mainstream society seem to be big things and they always will be because they always have been. The Beat Generation and Contemporary literature are prime examples of this, and this is what makes them so great to American Literature.
