American Renaissance Overview
In the 1830's, the American Renaissance started, and for which continued approximately till the end of the American Civil War. This sparked the age of the U.S. American literature era for which was mostly descriptive of an expression of a national spirit. This was taken over by New England Brahmin writers. These writers include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendel Holmes, and James Russell Lowell. As well as this being known as the American Renaissance, this period was also known as a "Romantic Period in Literature." This was also thought of as the greatest period in American literature. This was a space in time when the the novel was just starting to be developed.
During this period, some major historical events happened. At the start of this period, Manifest Destiny or what America was thought to become later, was imagined. This created numerous cities and towns through out America. After the Mexican-American war, slavery was abolished and women got the chance to vote. The Occult, Apocalyptic and Utopian Movements happened in this period of time. The thought of religion was at the rise during this period. One of the reasons as to why this was such an amazing period in literature is due to how finally the American writers were seen as equal or close to equal to the European writers. Although, now it doesn't seem as big of an accomplishment, then, it was huge for anyone in the literature field. Before this time, American writers were seen as week next to the European writers. Since then, we are able to have unusual plot lines, which add depth and impact to stories, making American writers very superior to other writers around the world. Although men have always been prominent in literature and general writing, women started to appear more frequently on the stage of literature itself.
