The poetry from the postmodern era was initially opposed because of the writing techniques used and because they did not fit the established format of previous poetry. An extreme amount of imagery and symbolism is used. Many poems from this time were used to introduce and analyze problems in society such as repression. This era contained many poetry movements such as Conceptual poetry and Flarf. Conceptual Poetry focused more on the initial concept and not the final project. This movements writings were more process-concerned and less focused on the expression. The purpose of these writings was the get the reader thinking, not necessarily to be read completely. Conceptual poetry was written by people such as Robert Fitterman, Kenneth Goldsmith, and Vanessa Place, among others. Flarf poetry was started by Gary Sullivan. This poetry was used to explore issues not usually acceptable to write about because it rejected what was conventionally approved. It rejected standards of quality and tone. Such writers included Jordan Davis, Katie Degentesh, Drew Gardener, Nada Gordon, Mitch Highfill, Rodney Koeneke, Micheal Magee, Sharon Mesmer, Mel Nichols, Gary Sullivan, and many others.
